Different Ways to Improve Your Child’s Attention While Reading
Sitting down and reading a book requires a great deal of concentration. This can be a challenging task for hyperactive kids as they struggle to focus on the task. Even many adults struggle to focus on the book while reading. Low concentration level is a common issue for many young children and this can have some negative effects on the way they learn and retain information.
If you are parents to kids who find them difficult to stay focused while reading, here are some helpful ways shared by Child care experts to help them improve their concentration level.
Break up the reading time:
Kids may feel motivated to start reading a new book, but struggle to retain the motivation and sit for a long time and read the book. If this is the case with your kids, please bring back their reading time and encourage them to take breaks every 15 to 20 minutes. During the breaks, they can do breathing exercises or some other on-the-spot physical exercises.
Observe optimal of the day:
It is a fact that children’s concentration levels and alertness change dramatically during the day. As parents, you have to observe carefully which time of the day your child is ready d and willing to sit down and concentrate on reading a book. Identify the time and do this activity with your kids then.
Create a distraction-free reading area:
In Rolling Hills, CA preschools, teachers have set up a quiet and destruction-free reading area for their students. Children should sit comfortably and read books in that specified area.
Think creatively:
You need to think creatively to turn the reading experience into a fun hands-on activity. Try role-playing the scenes from the book they are reading or have them draw the characters from the book. For example, if you are reading A Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, try making a caterpillar with colorful papers or playdough. These hands-on activities would motivate them to read more books.
Identify your child's interest:
In Daycare centres, teachers try to identify their students’ interests and accordingly they provide books to them. For example, if one child is fascinated by dinosaurs, he would like to read books about them.
Encourage physical activity:
Try to involve your kids in different physical activities to improve their concentration levels. Before they sit down for the reading activity encourage them to engage in some outdoor games or a fun dance routine.
